Background:
The Foruria family struggles with the recent lost of a family member; Elsa, Joel's big sister. Joel has struggle going through life without Elsa. Elsa was quickly diagnosed Pulmonary Fibrosis (fatal lung disease) at age of sixteen. She went to get a diagnosue due her shortness of breath, her constant coughing and also the diminished exercise tolerance during sport class. They said she had two more years to live however she has extended her existence to quite a long time, she passed away in May 2012 in the Santa Maria Hospital.
Teresa, his mother, has no occupation and deeply mourns about her daughter. She does the house chores and even does Joel his tasks such as cleaning his room to get abstraction. Joel is quite spoiled because his mother does anything for him if he would just ask. Especially around pocket money.
Omar, his father, has a hardened attitude. He occupies himself in the taxi business and works full-time (six days a week) at the company Yellow Cab Co.
Omar and Teresa do not seem concerned about Joel his current gang activity, they see it as a temporary issue which will stop as he grows up.
